Avian Influenza H5N1, or bird flu, is now causing disease and death across species lines. To date, H5N1 has caused one recorded human death, several domestic cat deaths, and has been reported in multiple species including cattle, deer, and of course poultry. Cats are dying after being fed RAW POULTRY or UNPASTEURIZED MILK. Dr. Hall has never encouraged feeding raw diet, but this new disease threat is a serious cause for concern. H5N1 can be spread by contact with dead or dying birds (wild or domestic) and byproducts from those animals affected. People with backyard poultry must be especially vigilant. Please watch for updates in the news media and be proactive with food safety. Influenza viruses can mutate readily, and we don't know the full extent of this disease threat as of yet.
